Wines hailing from this small valley within the valley are often described as "an iron fist in a velvet glove". Lively and alluring aromas of sweet red fruit, black licorice, damp asphalt and crushed violet petals make for a complex and layered nose complimenting a medium-plus body showing blackberry, cream de cassis, fig, anise and smoked cardamom. The groundbreaking concept for Opus One was forged by Robert Mondavi of the Napa Valley and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Bordeaux’s Château Mouton Rothschild. From the very first vintage in 1979 it has represented the perfect fusion of Bordeaux and the Napa Valley. Mouton Rothschild winemakers crafted Mondavi’s grapes into fantastic wine and aged it in French oak barrels. Rumors turned heads while tales and legends formed in the beginning days of what started as an elusive wine, but one thing remained consistent: Quality, vintage after vintage. For decades now the winemaking has been under the direction of Michael Silacci, who ensures the Bordeaux varietals grown in some of Napa’s most coveted vineyards – including the famed To Kalon vineyard – are rigorously selected to achieve quality akin to a First Growth Bordeaux.
